January 5

This morning we considered how good the light was, and how the Lord separated it from darkness. But notice something else: God gave the light his special attention. "God saw the light." He looked at it with deep satisfaction. He gazed at it with pleasure. He saw that it was good.

If the Lord has given you light, dear reader, he looks at that light with extraordinary interest. Not only because it is his own handiwork, but because it is like himself—for he is light!

How sweet it is to know that God's eye watches so tenderly over the work of grace he has begun in you! He never loses sight of the treasure he has placed in these clay vessels of ours. Sometimes we cannot see the light. But God always sees the light. And that is so much better than our seeing it.

Better for the judge to see my innocence than for me to think I see it.

Yes, it comforts me to know I am one of God's people. But listen: whether I know it or not, if the Lord knows it, I am safe. This is the bedrock truth: "The Lord knows those who are his."

You may be sighing and groaning right now because of inbred sin that still lives in you. You may be mourning over your darkness. But the Lord sees light in your heart, because he put it there. And all the fog and gloom in your soul cannot hide your light from his gracious eye.

You may have sunk into the pit of depression, even despair. But if there is any longing in your soul for Christ, if you are seeking to rest in his finished work, God sees the light. He not only sees it—he preserves it in you! "I, the Lord, do keep it."

What a precious thought for those of us who have tried so hard to guard our own souls and discovered we are powerless to do it! The light he preserves by his grace, he will one day develop into the blazing glory of noon. He will bring it to the fullness of glory.

The light within you is the dawn of your eternal day.

Closing Prayer

When darkness makes you doubt your salvation today, remember: God sees what you cannot. The light he kindled in you, he will keep burning until glory.
