A selfish person in trouble is tough to comfort because they rely solely on themselves. When they're sad, their resources run dry. But a generous person, filled with Christian compassion, finds comfort in sources outside themselves. They go to God first and receive abundant help. They also find solace in the world's affairs, their country, and especially the church.
David was deeply sorrowful in this Psalm, saying, "I'm like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am like a sparrow alone on the rooftop." His comfort came from believing God would have mercy on Zion. Though he was downcast, Zion would prosper.
Christian, learn to find comfort in God's kind dealings with the church. What is precious to your Lord should be precious to you too. Even if your path is dark, take heart in the triumphs of His cross and the spread of His truth. Personal troubles fade when we focus on what God has done and will do for Zion. Whenever you're discouraged, stop dwelling on your problems. Seek the welfare of Zion. When you pray, don't limit your requests to your own troubles, but pray for the church's well-being. "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem," and your soul will be refreshed.
Closing Prayer
Lord, as this day closes, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
