January 17

At that hour David saw Bathsheba. We are never beyond temptation's reach. Whether at home or out in the world, we're faced with temptations to sin. Morning brings peril, and evening still finds us in danger. Those kept by God are safe, but woe to anyone who ventures out or even walks in their own home unprotected.

Those who feel secure are at greater risk. Self-confidence is sin's armor-bearer. David should have been fighting the Lord's battles, but he stayed in Jerusalem, indulging in luxury, rising from his bed at evening. Idleness and comfort are the devil's helpers, bringing him plenty of prey.

In stagnant waters, harmful creatures multiply. Neglected soil grows weeds and thorns. Let the love of Jesus drive us to be active and useful! Seeing Israel's king lazily leaving his bed late in the day and falling immediately into temptation, I am warned to stand guard. Could the king have sought solitude and devotion on his rooftop?

If so, what a warning that no place is safe from sin, no matter how secret! Our hearts are like tinder, waiting to ignite from the many sparks around us, so we must stay vigilant everywhere to prevent a blaze. Satan can climb rooftops, enter closets, and even if we shut out that wicked fiend, our own corruptions can still ruin us unless grace intervenes. Reader, be wary of evening temptations.

Do not grow complacent. The sun may set, but sin rises. We need a night watchman just as much as a day guard. Holy Spirit, protect us from evil tonight. Amen.

Closing Prayer

God, at this day's end, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
