Those two disciples on the road to Emmaus had the most profitable walk of their lives. Their companion and teacher? The greatest tutor who ever lived—the one interpreter in a thousand, in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.

Think of it! The Lord Jesus himself condescended to become a preacher of the gospel. He was not ashamed to exercise his calling before an audience of just two people. And he still does not refuse to teach even one solitary soul. Let us court the company of such an Instructor! For until he is made wisdom to us, we shall never be wise unto salvation.

And what textbook did this unrivalled teacher use? The best of all books. Though he could reveal brand new truth—truths never before spoken—he chose instead to expound the old. He knew by his omniscience exactly how to teach, and by turning immediately to Moses and the prophets, he showed us something vital: the surest road to wisdom is not speculation, not human reasoning, not reading the latest books. It is meditation on the Word of God.

You want to be spiritually rich in heavenly knowledge? Then dig in this mine of diamonds! Gather pearls from this heavenly sea! When Jesus himself sought to enrich others, where did he work? In the quarry of Holy Scripture.

And what subject did he choose for those favored disciples? Jesus spoke about Jesus. He expounded all the things concerning himself. Here the diamond cut the diamond—and what could be more admirable? The Master of the house unlocked his own doors, conducted his guests to his own table, and placed his own dainties upon it. The one who hid the treasure in the field himself guided the searchers to it.

Naturally, our Lord discoursed upon the sweetest of all topics. And what could be sweeter to him than his own person and work? This is how we should always search the Word—with an eye to these things.

O for grace to study the Bible with Jesus as both our teacher and our lesson!

Closing Prayer

Open your Bible today expecting to meet the same teacher those disciples met. He still walks with those who search for him in his Word.
