April 13

Myrrh is a fitting symbol of Jesus because it is precious, fragrant, pleasant, healing, preserving, and connected with sacrifice. But why call Him "a bundle of myrrh"? First, it's about abundance. He's not just a drop; He's a full casket. Not a sprig or a flower, but a whole bundle. There's enough in Christ to meet all my needs, so I shouldn't hesitate to seek Him. Our Savior is compared to a "bundle" again for variety. In Christ, we find not just one necessity but the fullness of God. Everything we need is in Him.

Look at Jesus in His different roles: Prophet, Priest, King, Husband, Friend, Shepherd. Consider His life, death, resurrection, ascension, and return. See Him in His virtue, gentleness, courage, self-denial, love, faithfulness, truth, and righteousness. Everywhere, He is a bundle of preciousness. He's a "bundle of myrrh" for preservation—not scattered myrrh to be lost or crushed but gathered so we can treasure Him. We should value His words and ordinances, and guard our thoughts and knowledge of Him as precious, so the devil cannot take them from us.

Jesus is a "bundle of myrrh" for His special, distinguishing grace. From before the world began, He was set apart for His people. His aroma reaches those who know how to truly commune with Him. How blessed are those He has drawn into His secrets and set apart for Himself. How joyful are those who can truly say, "A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved to me."

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, as the morning comes, help us trust You wholly, even when the way is uncertain. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
