The well of Beer in the wilderness was famous because it came with a promise. The Lord told Moses, "Gather the people together, and I'll give them water." The people needed water, and God promised to provide. We also need new grace from heaven, and God has promised to give us all we need.
Before the water flowed, the people sang with faith. As they watched the clear water rise, their songs grew even more joyful. Like them, we who trust God's promises should rejoice, expecting revival in our souls. When it comes, our joy should overflow. Are we thirsty? Let's not complain. Let's sing.
Spiritual thirst can be tough to bear, but we don't have to endure it. God's promise points to a well; let's be hopeful and seek it. The well was also the focus of prayer: "Spring up, O well." We must ask for what God promises, or we show we lack desire and faith. Tonight, let's pray that our reading and devotions are more than routines. May they be channels of grace.
May the Holy Spirit work powerfully in us, filling us completely. Lastly, the well was a result of effort. "The nobles of the people dug it with their staves." God wants us active in seeking grace. Our tools are crude, but we must use them fully.
We shouldn't neglect prayer or meeting together. We must not ignore God's ordinances. He will give us peace, but not if we're idle. Let's stir ourselves to seek the Source of all our fresh springs.
Closing Prayer
Father, as evening comes, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
