"Nevertheless." Look at that word! As if all the foolishness and ignorance that Asaph had just confessed to God didn't matter one bit. Not one atom less true was his salvation, his acceptance, the blessed fact that he lived constantly in God's presence. He knew exactly what he was—lost, deceitful, vile by nature. And yet, in a glorious explosion of faith, he sings: "Nevertheless, I am continually with you."
Believer, you know Asaph's confession is yours too. You've seen your own heart. So say it with the same defiant faith: "Nevertheless! Since I belong to Christ, I am continually with God!"
What does this mean? It means you are continually on his mind. He is always thinking of you, and every thought is for your good. Continually before his eye—the eye of the Lord never closes, never sleeps, but watches over you without a moment's break. Continually in his hand, gripped so tightly that no power in heaven or hell can snatch you away. Continually on his heart, worn there like the high priest wore the names of the twelve tribes on his breastplate. Forever.
You are always in God's thoughts. The depths of his love constantly yearn toward you. Every turn of providence, he is working for your good. He has marked you like a signet ring on his arm. His love is stronger than death! Many waters cannot quench it. The floods cannot drown it.
Surprising grace! God sees you in Christ. And though you are utterly repulsive in yourself, he sees you wearing Christ's perfect garments, washed in Christ's blood. This is how you stand before him: accepted. Continually in his favor. Continually with him.
Here is comfort for every tried and tormented soul. When the tempest rages within you, look at the calm that surrounds you. "Nevertheless." O say it in your heart right now. Let it sink deep. Take the peace it brings. "Nevertheless, I am continually with you."
Closing Prayer
Whatever failure is screaming in your face today, speak this word over it: "Nevertheless." You are not defined by your worst moment. You are held by infinite love.
