August 17

From our Lord's words, we learn there's a limit to sickness. There's a boundary it cannot cross. Lazarus might have faced death, but it wasn't the end of his story. In every illness, the Lord declares to the waves of pain, "This far you may come, but no further." His goal isn't to destroy, but to teach us.

Wisdom controls the furnace and sets the temperature. Everything about our illness is under the careful limits set by God. He's decided the time, manner, intensity, frequency, and consequences of our sufferings.

Every heartbeat, sleepless night, relapse, and low mood is known to God. Every sanctifying result is part of His eternal plan. Nothing escapes His notice. The limit is adjusted to our strength, the purpose intended, and the grace provided.

Affliction doesn't happen by chance. The weight of each hardship perfectly fits the medicine our souls need. We won't suffer too much or find relief too late.

This limit is set with tenderness. The divine Surgeon doesn't cut deeper than necessary. God doesn't willingly afflict or grieve us. No mother is more compassionate than our gracious God. Considering how stubborn we can be, it's a wonder our trials aren't harsher. Take comfort knowing He who sets the boundaries of our lives also sets the boundaries of our struggles.

Closing Prayer

Father, as evening falls, fill us with Your love and help us share it freely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
