A profound truth lies in the fact that Jesus refused the myrrhed wine-cup. Long ago, from heaven, the Son of God saw the depths of human suffering. He counted the full cost of our salvation and did not hold back. He determined to make a complete atoning sacrifice, coming all the way from divine glory to the cross.
The myrrhed cup would have eased his suffering slightly, but he rejected it. He wouldn't stop short of the full suffering he took on for us. How often have we longed for relief in our own trials that might have harmed us? Reader, have you ever wished to escape hardship with a restless eagerness?
God's providence can take from us what we hold dear. Imagine if you were told, "Your loved one can live, but at the cost of God's honor." Could you turn away from that temptation and say, "Your will be done"? It's a blessing to declare, "Lord, if my suffering honors you more, then let it be. I decline comfort if it stands in your way." Let's strive to follow our Lord, enduring trials for his sake, setting aside our comfort when it hinders our purpose. We need much grace, but much grace is available.
Closing Prayer
Lord, as we end this day, fill us with Your love so we can share it freely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
