Waiting seems easy, doesn't it? But it's one of the hardest lessons a Christian soldier ever learns. Years of teaching, and still we struggle! Marching? Quick-marching? Much easier for God's warriors than standing still.
There are hours of perplexity when even the most willing spirit, desperately eager to serve the Lord, has no idea which way to turn. What then? Vex yourself with despair? Fly back in cowardice? Turn right in fear? Rush forward in presumption? No! Simply wait.
But wait in prayer. Call upon God. Spread your case before him. Tell him your difficulty and plead his promise of aid. When caught between two duties, how sweet it is to be humble as a child and wait with simplicity of soul upon the Lord. We're always safe when we know our own folly and are heartily willing to be guided by God's will.
And wait in faith. Express your unstaggering confidence in him—for unfaithful, untrusting waiting is nothing but an insult to the Lord! Believe this: even if he keeps you waiting until midnight, he will come at exactly the right time. The vision shall come and shall not tarry.
Wait in quiet patience. Don't rebel against the affliction—bless your God for it! Never murmur against the human instruments, as Israel did against Moses. Never wish you could go back to the world. Accept your case exactly as it stands, and place it—simply, wholly, without any self-will—into the hands of your covenant God.
Say it: "Now, Lord, not my will, but yours be done. I know not what to do. I am brought to extremities. But I will wait until you cleave the floods or drive back my foes. I will wait, if you keep me many a day, for my heart is fixed upon you alone, O God, and my spirit waits for you in full conviction that you will yet be my joy and my salvation, my refuge and my strong tower!"
Closing Prayer
That decision you're rushing toward today? Stop. Spread it before God. Then wait. He has never been late, and he won't start with you.
