Gossip harms in three ways: it damages the one who tells it, the one who hears it, and the one it targets. Whether the story is true or false, God's Word tells us not to spread it. We should cherish the reputations of God’s people, refusing to assist the devil in tarnishing the Church and the Lord's name. Some tongues need restraint rather than encouragement.

Many take pride in tearing down others, believing it lifts them up. Noah's wise sons covered their father’s shame, while the one who exposed him faced a grave curse. One day, we might need the same patience and silence from others. Let’s offer it willingly to those who need it now. Let this be our rule: speak evil of no one.

The Holy Spirit allows us to correct sin, teaching us to do it properly. We should address our brother directly, not talk about him behind his back. This approach is honest, kind, and Christlike, and God can use it for good. Do we hesitate?

We need to follow our conscience, tackling the task despite discomfort. If we ignore a friend's sin, we risk sharing in it. Many have been saved from serious wrongs by timely, caring warnings from faithful friends. Jesus showed us how to guide erring friends in his warning to Peter, the prayer that preceded it, and the gentle way he addressed Peter’s bold denial that he needed it.

Closing Prayer

Lord, as we begin today, help us trust You completely, even when the way isn't clear. Through Christ, Amen.
