December 9

Peace and rest aren't for the unregenerate; they're the special possession of God's people alone. God, the author of peace, grants perfect peace to those who fix their hearts on Him. Before sin entered the world, God gave man the tranquil beauty of Eden. But sin quickly marred that innocence.

In the days of the flood, when wrath covered the earth, Noah's family found safety in the ark, which carried them from a condemned world to a new one. This ark prefigures Jesus, our salvation. In Egypt, Israel rested safely beneath the blood-marked doorways while the first-born were struck down. In the wilderness, God's guiding presence and the water from the rock gave weary travelers rest. Right now, we rest in God's promises, knowing His words are full of truth and power. We rest in His teachings, which provide comfort; we rest in His grace, a haven full of delight.

We're more blessed than David in Adullam or Jonah under the gourd, for nothing can invade or destroy our shelter. Jesus Himself is our quiet rest. Drawing near to Him through communion, Scripture, prayer, or praise brings peace to our souls. "I hear the words of love, I gaze upon the blood, I see the mighty sacrifice, and I've peace with God. It's everlasting peace, as sure as Jehovah's name, as steady as His throne. The clouds may part, storms may come, but this blood-sealed friendship never changes. The cross is ever near."

Closing Prayer

Lord, as this day comes to a close, help us trust fully in You, even when we don't see the way ahead. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
