December 31

Patience had its perfect work in the Lord Jesus. Until the last day of the feast, He pleaded with the Jews, just as He pleads with us on this last day of the year, waiting to show us grace. It's truly remarkable how patient our Savior is, bearing with us year after year despite our provocations and stubbornness. It's a wonder we're still in the land of mercy. Jesus' compassion was clear as He cried out, showing not just a loud voice but tenderness.

He urges us to be reconciled. The Apostle says, "We pray you, as though God did ask you by us." These are earnest, heartfelt words. How great must His love be to weep over sinners, like a mother calling her children to her arms. Surely, our willing hearts will respond to such an invitation.

Jesus provides abundantly, offering everything needed to quench our soul's thirst. His atonement gives peace to our conscience, the gospel teaches our minds, and Jesus Himself is the focus of our love. His truth nourishes us completely. Though we may be desperate, Jesus is able to restore us.

He freely invites everyone who is thirsty. There's no distinction except thirst. Whether it's a longing for wealth, ambition, pleasure, knowledge, or rest, those who thirst are welcome. The thirst itself might not be a sign of grace but could indicate deep sinfulness longing for satisfaction.

Yet, it’s not goodness that earns the invitation. Jesus offers it freely to all. The sinner must come directly to Jesus, not to works or doctrines, but to the Redeemer who bore our sins on the cross. The bleeding, dying, rising Savior is our only hope.

Let us drink now, before the year's last day ends. No preparation is needed. Drinking represents a simple act of receiving; anyone can do it. Our sinfulness doesn't hinder the invitation to believe in Jesus. We need no fancy vessel to drink; the poorest among us can kneel and receive this living water. Filthy, broken lips cannot defile it; they will be purified. Jesus is our fountain of hope. Hear the dear Redeemer's loving voice speaking to each of us: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink."

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, as this new day begins, help us place our complete trust in You, even when the way seems unclear. We pray in Your name. Amen.
