January 21

When Moses sang at the Red Sea, his heart overflowed with joy because he knew one thing: every last Israelite was safe. Not a single drop of spray fell from those solid walls until the very last of God's Israel had planted his foot on the other side. Only then—only when all were through—did the floods crash back into place. Part of Moses' song declared: "In your mercy you have led forth the people you have redeemed."

One day, when God's elect sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and of the Lamb, this will be the boast of Jesus: "Of all those you gave me, I have lost none!" In heaven, there will be no vacant throne. "For all the chosen race shall meet around the throne, shall bless the conduct of his grace, and make his glories known!" Every single person God has chosen, every soul Christ has redeemed, every heart the Spirit has called, every believer who trusts in Jesus—all will safely cross the dividing sea. All!

But we are not all safely landed yet: "Part of the host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now." The vanguard of the army has already reached the shore. We are marching through the depths; we are at this day following hard after our Leader into the heart of the sea.

So be of good cheer! The rear-guard will soon be where the vanguard already is. The last of the chosen ones will soon have crossed the sea, and then—what a song! The song of triumph when all are secure.

But oh! If one were absent—oh! if one of his chosen family should be cast away—it would make an everlasting discord in the song of the redeemed, and cut the strings of the harps of paradise, so that music could never be drawn from them again. The very thought is impossible. Unthinkable. Because the God who parts the sea does not lose those he leads through it.

Closing Prayer

Whatever waters you're walking through today, remember: the God who called you will complete what he started. Not one of his children will be left behind.
