January 30

The people of Christ's church should always be praying, always seeking the Holy Spirit's anointing on their hearts, praying for Christ's kingdom to come and his will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. But there are seasons when God especially favors Zion. These moments should be to us like "the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees."

When you sense that rustling, that divine movement, you must pray with double intensity, double earnestness, wrestling at the throne of grace like never before. Action should be immediate and vigorous. The tide is flowing! Now let us pull mightily for the shore. Oh, for the outpourings of Pentecost! Oh, for Pentecostal labors!

Christian, you know these seasons in your own soul. There are times when you hear "the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees." You find peculiar power in prayer. The Spirit of God floods you with joy and gladness. Scripture opens up before you like a treasure chest. The promises are applied to your heart. You walk in the light of God's countenance. You experience peculiar freedom in worship, a closeness to Christ that is not your usual experience.

Now! At these joyous moments when you hear that holy rustling in the trees above you, now is the time to bestir yourself. Now is the time to break that stubborn sin, while God's Spirit helps your weakness. Spread your sail! But remember what you sometimes sing: "I can only spread the sail; You! You! must breathe the auspicious gale."

Only be sure your sail is up. Don't miss the gale because you weren't prepared for it. Seek God's help to be more earnest in your duties when he makes you stronger in faith. Be more constant in prayer when you have greater liberty at the throne. Live a holier life when you walk so closely with Christ.

The rustling has begun. Can you hear it?

Closing Prayer

Today, listen carefully. If you sense God moving, if prayer comes easier, if Scripture speaks louder—don't waste the moment. Spread your sail now.
