These words capture the believer's longing for Christ and the desire to be with Him now. Where do You feed Your flock? In Your house? I'll seek You there. In private prayer? Then I'll keep praying. In the Word? I'll study it diligently.
In Your ordinances? I'll follow them wholeheartedly. Show me where You feed, for where You stand as Shepherd, I'll stay as Your sheep. Only You can meet my needs. I can't bear to be apart from You.
My soul thirsts for the comfort of Your presence. "Where do You make Your flock rest at noon?" Whether morning or noon, my rest is with You and Your beloved flock. My soul's rest is a grace-given rest, found only in You. Where is the shadow of that rock?
Why should I not rest there? "Why should I be as one who strays by the flocks of Your companions?" You have companions, why shouldn't I be one? Satan says I'm unworthy. But I was always unworthy, yet You've loved me for so long. My unworthiness isn't a barrier to fellowship with You. I may be weak in faith, prone to stumble, but that weakness is why I need to be where You feed Your flock, to be strengthened and kept safe by the still waters.
Why should I stray? There's no reason to, only countless reasons not to. Jesus calls me to come. If He withdraws a bit, it's to make me cherish His presence more. Now that I'm grieved and longing, I'm sure He'll lead me back to that safe place where His flock finds shelter from the heat.
Closing Prayer
Lord, as evening falls, help us place our trust fully in You, even when the path isn't clear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
