How common—too common!—is the sin of forgetting the Holy Spirit. This is folly and ingratitude. He deserves so much better from us, for he is good, supremely good.

As God, he is good in his very essence. He shares in that threefold cry of "Holy, holy, holy" that rises to the Triune Jehovah. He is unmixed purity, truth, and grace.

He is good in his kindness toward us—tenderly bearing with our waywardness, striving with our rebellious wills, quickening us from our death in sin, then training us for heaven like a loving nurse fosters her child. How generous, how forgiving, how tender is this patient Spirit of God!

He is good in all his works. Everything he does is good to the highest degree: he plants good thoughts in your mind, prompts good actions, reveals good truths, brings good promises to mind just when you need them, helps you achieve good things, and leads you to good outcomes. There is not one spiritual good in all the world that doesn't come from him. Heaven itself will owe the perfection of its redeemed inhabitants to his work.

He is good in every office he fills. Whether as Comforter, Instructor, Guide, Sanctifier, Quickener, or Intercessor, he fulfills each role perfectly, and every work brings the highest good to God's church. Those who yield to his influence become good. Those who obey his impulses do good. Those who live under his power receive good.

So then! How should we act toward so good a Person? With gratitude! Revere him. Adore him as God over all, blessed forever. Own his power and your need of him by waiting upon him in all your holy enterprises. Seek his help every hour. Never grieve him. And speak to his praise whenever you can.

The church will never prosper until it more reverently believes in the Holy Spirit. He is so good, so kind—how sad that we should grieve him by our slights and negligences!

Closing Prayer

When did you last thank the Holy Spirit for his patient work in your life? Stop right now and acknowledge his goodness. He deserves so much better than our forgetfulness.
