Evening Devotion

It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man.

No doubt you have felt it—the pull to trust in what you can see instead of resting in the invisible God. How often we Christians run to other people for help and advice, spoiling the beautiful simplicity of depending on God alone.

Perhaps you are anxious about earthly concerns tonight. Then let me reason with you for a moment. You trust in Jesus, and Jesus alone, for your salvation. So why are you troubled? "Because I have so many worries!" But isn't it written, "Cast your burden on the Lord"? And again: "Don't be anxious about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition, make your requests known to God."

Can't you trust God with everyday matters? "Oh, I wish I could!" Wait. Stop right there. If you cannot trust God with your earthly needs, how dare you trust him with your eternal soul? You'll rely on him for redemption from hell but not for next month's bills? Think about that! Is God not enough for your needs? Is the Almighty too small for your problems?

Do you need another set of eyes watching over you besides the One who sees every secret thing? Has his heart grown cold? Has his arm grown tired? If so, go find yourself another god! But if he is infinite, all-powerful, faithful, true, and all-wise, why are you running around looking for backup plans? Why are you digging through the dirt for another foundation when the one you have can bear any weight you could ever place on it?

Christian, stop watering down your wine. Don't contaminate the pure gold of faith with the cheap metal of human confidence. Wait only on God. Let your expectation come from him alone. Don't long for Jonah's little plant that gave temporary shade. Rest in Jonah's God instead. Let fools build their lives on the shifting sand of earthly securities. But you—you who can see the storm coming—build your life on the Rock that will last forever.

Closing Prayer

What backup plan are you secretly maintaining? What human solution are you clutching while claiming to trust God? Drop it. The Rock beneath you is solid enough.
