Whenever we are privileged to eat the bread that Jesus gives, we are satisfied like Ruth at Boaz's table—full and sweetly content. When Jesus is the host, no guest leaves empty from his table.

Every part of us finds what it needs! Our minds are satisfied with the precious truth Christ reveals. Our hearts rest content in Jesus, the altogether lovely object of our affection. Our hope is satisfied—for whom have we in heaven but Jesus? Our desires find their answer—what more could we wish for than to know Christ and be found in him?

Jesus fills our conscience until it rests in perfect peace. He persuades our judgment of the certainty of his teachings. He stocks our memory with all he has done. He fires our imagination with all he is yet to do.

But like Ruth, we are "satisfied, and left." We have drunk deeply. We thought we could take in all of Christ. But when we have done our very best, we must leave behind a vast remainder.

We have sat at the table of the Lord's love and cried, "Nothing but the infinite can satisfy me! I am such a great sinner that I must have infinite merit to wash my sin away!" And then? We found our sin removed and merit still to spare! We found our hunger satisfied at the feast of sacred love, and a redundance of spiritual meat remaining.

There are certain sweet things in God's Word we have not enjoyed yet—truths we are obliged to leave for a while. We are like those disciples to whom Jesus said, "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now."

Yes, there are graces we have not attained. Places of fellowship nearer to Christ where we have not reached. Heights of communion our feet have not climbed. At every banquet of love, there are many baskets of fragments left.

Let us magnify the liberality of our glorious Boaz!

Closing Prayer

Whatever emptiness you bring to Christ today, know this: his table is already set, his portions are endless, and you will leave satisfied with baskets still full.
