Jesus, our Lord—once crucified, dead and buried—now sits upon the throne of glory. The highest place heaven affords is his by undisputed right.
But here is what should make your heart sing: Christ's exaltation in heaven is a representative exaltation. He sits at the Father's right hand for us. Yes, as God himself, he possesses glories that no created being could ever share. But as our Mediator? The honors Jesus wears in heaven are the inheritance of every single saint.
Think about how breathtakingly close Christ's union is with his people. We are actually one with him! We are members of his body. His exaltation is our exaltation. He promised to let us sit on his throne, just as he overcame and sat down with his Father on his throne. He has a crown, and he gives us crowns too. He has a throne, but listen—he is not content to have a throne to himself. At his right hand there must be his queen, arrayed in "gold of Ophir." He cannot be glorified without his bride.
Look up, believer! Look to Jesus right now. Let the eye of your faith behold him with many crowns upon his head. And remember this: you will one day be like him when you see him as he is. No, you won't be as great as he is. You won't be divine. But still you will, in a measure, share the same honors. You will enjoy the same happiness. You will possess the same dignity.
So be content to live unknown for a little while. Keep walking your weary way through the fields of poverty or up the hills of affliction. Because soon—soon!—you will reign with Christ. He has "made us kings and priests unto God, and we shall reign forever and ever."
Oh, wonderful thought for the children of God! We have Christ as our glorious representative in heaven's courts right now. And soon he will come to receive us to himself. To bring us there. To behold his glory. To share his joy.
Closing Prayer
Whatever valley you walk through today, remember who represents you in heaven. The One on the throne knows your name, shares your nature, and refuses to be glorified without you.
