If God cursed the man who rebuilt Jericho, how much more those who try to restore false religion among us! In our fathers' days, the gigantic walls of religious deception fell by the power of their faith, the perseverance of their efforts, and the blast of their gospel trumpets. And now? Some are trying to rebuild that accursed system on its old foundations.

O Lord, tear down their unrighteous efforts! Pull down every stone they build!

This should be serious business with us. We must be thoroughly purged of every error that might foster the spirit of false religion. And when we've made a clean sweep at home, we must oppose its all-too-rapid spread in the church and in the world.

How? In secret, through fervent prayer. In public, through decided testimony. We must warn those inclined toward religious error—with judicious boldness. We must instruct the young in gospel truth and tell them of the black doings of religious tyranny in olden times. We must spread the light more thoroughly through the land, for false priests, like owls, hate daylight.

Are we doing all we can for Jesus and the gospel? If not, our negligence plays into the hands of priestcraft. What are we doing to spread the Bible, which is poison to religious deception? Are we casting abroad good, sound gospel writings? Luther once said, "The devil hates goose quills"—and he has good reason! Ready writers, by the Holy Spirit's blessing, have done his kingdom much damage.

If the thousands who read this short word tonight will do all they can to hinder the rebuilding of this accursed Jericho, the Lord's glory shall speed among the sons of men.

Reader, what can you do? What will you do?
