June 18

Jesus, the Redeemer, is altogether ours. And ours forever. Every office Christ holds, he holds for us. He is king for us, priest for us, prophet for us. So whenever you come across a new title for the Redeemer, take hold of him by that name just as much as any other. The shepherd's staff, the father's rod, the captain's sword, the priest's mitre, the prince's scepter, the prophet's mantle — all of it is ours. Jesus has no dignity he will not employ for our exaltation. He has no prerogative he will not exercise for our defense.

His fullness as God is our unfailing, inexhaustible treasure-house. And his humanity, which he took on for our sake? That too is ours in all its perfection. To us, our gracious Lord communicates the spotless virtue of his stainless character. To us, he gives all the merit earned by his devoted life. On us, he bestows the reward won through perfect obedience and ceaseless service.

He makes the unsullied garment of his life our covering beauty. The glittering virtues of his character become our ornaments and jewels. The superhuman meekness of his death becomes our boast and glory. He bequeaths us his manger, to teach us how God came down to man. And his cross, to show us how man can go up to God.

Every thought, every emotion, every action, every word, every miracle, every intercession — all for us. He walked the road of sorrow on our behalf. And now he hands over to us, as our heavenly legacy, all the results of his life's labors.

He is just as much ours today as he ever was. And he is not ashamed to call himself "our Lord Jesus Christ." Think of it! Though he is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, he does not blush to be called ours.

Christ everywhere and in every way is our Christ, forever and ever most richly to enjoy. O my soul! By the power of the Holy Spirit, call him this morning, "your Redeemer."

Closing Prayer

Look at your Redeemer today and remember: his crown is your defense, his righteousness is your clothing, his victory is your inheritance. Live like someone who owns everything Christ has won.
