It is fondly imagined by some that Mary, the mother of our Lord, enjoyed special privileges—that she could look into Christ's very heart in ways we cannot hope to do. This notion has a surface plausibility, but not much more. We have no evidence that Mary knew more than the other disciples. Yes, she treasured what she knew in her heart. But nothing in the Evangelists suggests she was a better-instructed believer than any other follower of Christ.

All that she knew, we also may discover! Do you wonder that I should say so? Here is a text to prove it: "The secret of the Lord is with those who fear him, and he will show them his covenant." Remember the Master's words: "I no longer call you servants, for the servant does not know what his Lord does; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you."

So blessedly does this Divine Revealer of secrets tell us his heart! He keeps back nothing that would profit us. His own assurance rings out: "If it were not so, I would have told you." Does he not this day manifest himself to us as he does not to the world? Yes! It is even so!

Therefore we will not ignorantly cry out, "Blessed is the womb that bore you!" No—we will intelligently bless God that, having heard the Word and kept it, we enjoy communion with the Savior as true as Mary had! We have acquaintance with the secrets of his heart as real as any she could have obtained!

Happy soul to be thus privileged!

Closing Prayer

Stop wishing you had been there with Jesus in the flesh. You have his Word, his Spirit, and his promise to reveal everything you need. That's better than being in Mary's sandals.
