August 26

God's people find their deepest delight in the covenant itself. It is an endless wellspring of comfort whenever the Holy Spirit leads them into that banqueting hall and unfurls love's banner over their heads.

They love to think about how ancient this covenant is. Before the morning star knew where to shine, before planets learned their orbits, the safety of God's people was already secured in Christ Jesus. How their hearts thrill to remember the rock-solid certainty of it all! They meditate on "the sure mercies of David" and celebrate a covenant that is "signed, sealed, and ratified—all things ordered well."

Their hearts swell with joy when they consider that nothing can break it. Not time. Not eternity. Not life. Not death. Nothing! This covenant is as old as eternity and as everlasting as the Rock of ages.

And the fullness of it! They feast on a covenant that provides everything they could ever need. God himself is their portion. Christ is their companion. The Spirit is their Comforter. Earth is their lodge, and heaven is their home. They see it all written down like an ironclad will, an inheritance guaranteed to every soul who has a stake in this ancient, eternal deed.

Their eyes sparkled when they first discovered this treasure-trove in Scripture. But oh! How their souls were gladdened when they realized their divine kinsman had left it all to them in his last will and testament!

But most of all, God's people love to dwell on the sheer grace of this covenant. They understand that the old covenant of law failed because it was all about works, all about earning. But this covenant endures because grace is the basis, grace the condition, grace the strain, grace the bulwark, grace the foundation, grace the topstone.

This covenant? It is a treasury of wealth. A granary of food. A fountain of life. A storehouse of salvation. A charter of peace. A haven of joy.

Closing Prayer

Whatever threatens to shake you today, remember: your security rests not on your performance but on an unbreakable promise made before the stars were born.
