When primeval darkness heard the Almighty speak, "Let there be light," light burst forth instantly. The word of the Lord Jesus carries that same ancient power—equal in majesty! Redemption, like creation itself, has its word of might. Jesus speaks, and it is done.
Leprosy surrendered to no human cure, but it fled at once when the Lord said, "I will." The disease showed no signs of improvement, nature contributed nothing to its healing. The word alone—unaided!—accomplished the entire work on the spot and forever.
Sinner, you are in a worse plight than that leper! Follow his example—go to Jesus, "beseeching him and kneeling down to him." Exercise whatever little faith you have, even if all you can say is, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." And do not doubt the outcome. Jesus heals all who come. He casts out none.
But look closer at this story. Notice what deserves our devout worship: Jesus touched the leper. This ceremonially unclean man had broken every religious regulation by pressing into the house. But Jesus? Far from chiding him, Jesus broke through the law himself to meet him. He made an interchange with the leper. While he cleansed the man, he contracted Levitical defilement himself.
Even so, Jesus Christ was made sin for us, though in himself he knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
O that poor sinners would go to Jesus! Trust in the power of his blessed substitutionary work, and you will quickly learn the power of his gracious touch. That hand which multiplied the loaves, which saved sinking Peter, which upholds afflicted saints, which crowns believers—that same hand will touch every seeking sinner, and in a moment make them clean.
The love of Jesus is the source of salvation. He loves, he looks, he touches us, WE LIVE.
Closing Prayer
Whatever makes you feel untouchable today, bring it to Jesus. He is not afraid of your mess. He touches what religion avoids, and his touch makes all things clean.
