Perhaps nothing shows God's grace more beautifully than this: the Almighty stooping from his throne, coming down from heaven to attend to our needs and behold our sorrows. We love him for this! When Sodom and Gomorrah were drowning in sin, he would not destroy them without first making a personal visit. How can we help but pour out our hearts in love for a Lord who bends his ear from highest glory and brings it to the lips of dying sinners whose failing hearts long for reconciliation?
How can we not love him when we know he numbers every hair on our heads? He marks our path. He orders our ways. And this great truth comes even closer to our hearts when we remember how attentive he is—not merely to our earthly interests, but to the concerns of our souls.
Yes, leagues of distance lie between the finite creature and the infinite Creator. Yet there are links that bind us! When you weep a tear, never think God does not behold it. "As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear him." Your sigh is able to move the heart of Jehovah! Your whisper can incline his ear to you! Your prayer can stay his hand! Your faith can move his arm!
Never think that God sits on high taking no account of you. Remember this: however poor and needy you are, the Lord thinks upon you. His eyes run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are perfect toward him.
Oh! Then repeat this truth that never tires: No God is like the God my soul desires! He at whose voice heaven trembles—even he, great as he is, knows how to stoop to me.
Closing Prayer
Whatever burden you carry today, however small or overwhelming, the God who makes heaven tremble is bending down to listen. Whisper to him. He hears you.
