Angels are the unseen attendants of the saints of God! They bear us up in their hands, lest we dash our foot against a stone. Loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in the children of his love. They rejoice when a prodigal returns to the Father's house below, and they welcome the arrival of believers to the King's palace above.

In ancient times, God's people saw angels with their own eyes. And today, though we cannot see them, heaven is still open! The angels of God still ascend and descend upon the Son of Man to visit the heirs of salvation. Seraphim still fly from the altar with burning coals to touch the lips of those God loves. If our eyes could be opened, we would see horses of fire and chariots of fire surrounding the servants of the Lord! For we have come into the company of countless angels—all of them watchers and protectors of the royal seed.

The poet spoke no fantasy when he sang of angels with golden wings cleaving through the skies like flying messengers, fighting against foul fiends to aid us in our battles! To what dignity are the chosen elevated when the brilliant courtiers of heaven become their willing servants! Into what communion are we raised since we have fellowship with spotless celestials! How well defended we are, with all the twenty thousand chariots of God armed for our deliverance!

And to whom do we owe all this? Let the Lord Jesus Christ be forever precious to us! Through him we are seated in heavenly places, far above all principalities and powers. He is the one whose camp surrounds those who fear him. He is the true Michael, whose foot is upon the dragon.

All hail, Jesus! You are the Angel of Jehovah's presence. To you this family offers its morning worship.
