October 6

The one who believes in Jesus finds enough in the Lord to satisfy them now and forever. The believer is not someone whose days drag on, empty of comfort, whose nights stretch out long and lonely. No! In Christ, they have discovered such a spring of joy, such a fountain of consolation, that contentment and happiness are theirs.

Throw that believer in a dungeon, and they will find good company there. Drop them in a barren wasteland, and they will feast on the bread of heaven. Drive away all their friends, and they will meet the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Blast all their gourds—destroy every earthly comfort—and they will find shade beneath the Rock of Ages. Sap the very foundations of their earthly hopes, and their heart will remain fixed, trusting in the Lord.

The human heart is as insatiable as the grave until Jesus enters it. Then? Then it becomes a cup filled to overflowing. There is such fullness in Christ that he alone becomes the believer's all. The true saint is so completely satisfied with the all-sufficiency of Jesus that they thirst no more—except for deeper draughts of the living fountain.

And that, believer, is the sweetest thirst of all. Not a thirst of pain or desperation, but of loving desire. You will find it a sweet thing to be panting after a fuller enjoyment of Jesus' love. Someone once said, "I have been lowering my bucket into the well again and again, but now my thirst for Jesus has become so insatiable that I long to put the well itself to my lips and drink right on."

Is that how your heart feels right now? Do you sense that all your desires are satisfied in Jesus, that you want nothing now except to know him more deeply, to have closer fellowship with him? Then come continually to the fountain! Take the water of life freely! Jesus will never think you are taking too much. He will always welcome you, saying, "Drink! Yes, drink abundantly, O beloved!"

Closing Prayer

Today, whatever empty wells you've been drawing from, turn to Jesus. He is inviting you right now: "Drink deeply, my beloved." He will never turn you away for coming too often.
