There's still a place in England where any traveler who knocks at the door receives a free loaf of bread. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from. You knock at St. Cross Hospital, and the bread is yours.
Jesus Christ so loves sinners that he has built his own St. Cross Hospital. Any sinner who is hungry has only to knock and have their needs met. But listen! He has done something far better. He's attached a bath to this Hospital of the Cross. So when a soul comes black and filthy, they need only step in to be washed. The fountain is always full. Always efficacious. No sinner has ever entered it and found that it could not wash away their stains. Sins that were scarlet and crimson? All disappeared. The sinner comes out whiter than snow.
As if that weren't enough, this Hospital of the Cross has a wardrobe. Any sinner who comes—simply as a sinner—can be clothed from head to foot. And if you want to be a soldier? You won't just get ordinary clothes. You'll get armor that covers you from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. Ask for a sword? It's yours. A shield? That too. Nothing that is good for you shall be denied.
You shall have spending-money as long as you live. And when you enter into the joy of your Lord? An eternal inheritance of glorious treasure awaits you.
If all these things are to be had by merely knocking at mercy's door, O my soul, knock hard this morning! Ask large things from your generous Lord. Leave not the throne of grace until you've spread all your wants before the Lord. Keep knocking until by faith you have a comfortable prospect that they shall all be supplied.
No bashfulness need retard when Jesus invites. No unbelief should hinder when Jesus promises. No cold-heartedness should restrain when such blessings are to be obtained.
Closing Prayer
What need have you been too ashamed or too doubtful to bring to God? He's waiting at the door. Knock hard. Ask boldly. The provisions of heaven are yours.
