Jesus Christ was eternally rich, glorious, and exalted. Yet, "though he was rich, for your sakes he became poor." Just as a wealthy believer can't truly connect with his poorer brethren without sharing his resources, our Lord couldn't have fellowship with us without sharing His own richness. He became poor to make us rich. If He stayed on His throne and we remained fallen, salvation absent, communion with God would have been impossible.
Communion required the rich Savior to share His estate with His poor relatives, giving His perfection to us sinners. We, poor and guilty, receive His fullness, grace for grace. In this giving and receiving, Jesus descends from the heights and we rise from the depths to embrace each other in true fellowship. We must be enriched by Him who holds infinite treasures to commune. Our guilt must vanish in His righteousness before our souls can walk with purity.
Jesus must clothe us in His own garments to admit us into His palace of glory. He must wash us in His blood so we're not too defiled for His embrace. Believer, this is love! For your sake, Jesus "became poor" to lift you into fellowship with Himself.
Closing Prayer
Father, as this new day begins, help us to trust You completely, even when the way is unclear. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
