This is God's sovereign mercy: "I'll give them the shower in its season." Only God can declare, "I'll give them showers." Only He can command the clouds to bring rain. Who sends rain upon the earth and scatters showers on the grass? It's the Lord. Grace is God's gift; we can't produce it ourselves. And just like the land needs rain, we need grace. You can till the soil and plant seeds, but without rain, what will grow? So it is with God's blessing. All efforts are in vain until He sends a downpour of salvation. It's abundant grace.
"I'll send them showers." He doesn't promise just a few drops, but showers. God’s blessings come so generously they're beyond what we can contain. We need such overflowing grace to keep us humble, prayerful, and holy. It's grace that makes us zealous, sustains us in this life, and ultimately brings us to heaven. We can't manage without these saturating showers. It's also timely grace.
"I'll cause the shower to come down in its season." What's your season today? Is it a time of drought? That's the time for showers. Is it a period of heaviness and dark clouds? Then showers are on the way. "As your days so shall your strength be." And this blessing is varied. "I'll give you showers of blessing." The word's plural. God sends all sorts of blessings, linked like a golden chain. If He grants converting grace, He'll also provide comforting grace. He'll pour out "showers of blessing." So look up today, thirsty soul, and open yourself to God’s heavenly watering.
Closing Prayer
God, as we start this day, thank You for grace that meets us right where we are. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
