March 15

Christ has grace without measure in himself. But here's the wonder: he has not kept it for himself! As a reservoir empties itself into the pipes, so Christ has emptied out his grace for his people. "From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace." He seems to possess grace only to give it away.

He stands like a fountain, always flowing—but only flowing to fill empty pitchers and satisfy thirsty lips that draw near. Like a tree bearing sweet fruit, not to decorate the branches, but to be gathered by those who hunger.

Grace—whether its work be to pardon, to cleanse, to preserve, to strengthen, to enlighten, to quicken, or to restore—all flows from him freely and without price. There is not one form of the work of grace which he has not bestowed upon his people.

Think of it! As blood flows from the heart to every member of the body, so the influences of grace are the inheritance of every saint united to the Lamb. Here is sweet communion between Christ and his Church—they both receive the same grace! Christ is the head upon which the oil is first poured, but the same oil runs down to the very edge of the garments, so that the lowliest saint has an anointing of the same costly oil as that which fell upon the head.

This is true communion: when the sap of grace flows from the stem to the branch, and when we perceive that the stem itself is sustained by the very nourishment which feeds the branch. As we daily receive grace from Jesus, and more constantly recognize it as coming from him, we behold him in communion with us and enjoy the felicity of communion with him.

Let us make daily use of our riches! Ever repair to him as to our own Lord in covenant, taking from him the supply of all we need with as much boldness as men take money from their own purse.

Closing Prayer

Stop rationing grace as if Christ might run out. He is a fountain, not a canteen. Come boldly today and take what you need—with as much confidence as reaching into your own wallet.
