This verse speaks to the doctrine of election: there are some whom the Father has given to Christ. It also addresses effectual calling: those given to Christ will come to Him, even if they initially resist. They will be brought from darkness into God's marvelous light. Faith is necessary; even those given to Christ aren't saved unless they come to Jesus. They must come because there's no other way to heaven but through Christ.
All whom the Father gives to Jesus must come to Him. No one can reach heaven without coming to Christ. Consider the power in the words "shall come." Jesus doesn't say they might come or might have the power to come. He says they "shall come." Through His messengers, His word, and His Spirit, Jesus wonderfully compels people to come and share in His feast. He does this without violating our free will but by the power of His grace.
I may influence another's will, and yet their will remains free, as the influence aligns with human understanding. Jesus knows how to use irresistible arguments and powerful reasons to reach our hearts, and how the Spirit moves in our souls to bring us to surrender to His love. How do we recognize those whom God has chosen? They willingly and gladly accept Christ, coming to Him with sincere faith, relying on Him for salvation and fulfillment. Reader, have you come to Jesus this way?
Closing Prayer
Lord, as this day closes, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
