August 21

We find great comfort in what God has chosen not to say. His words are full of comfort and joy; what He hasn't said holds rich consolation too. One of these "said nots" preserved Israel in Jeroboam's days, for "the Lord said not that He'd blot out the name of Israel from under heaven" (2 Kings 14:27). In our text, we have assurance God answers prayer because He has "not said to the seed of Israel, Seek you me in vain." If you write bitter things against yourself, remember that if God hasn't cut you off from mercy, there's no room for despair.

Even our conscience holds little weight without God's voice. What God has said, we should tremble at! But don't let your imagination lead you to despondency and despair. Many fear there's something in God's decree barring them from hope, but this fear is unfounded. No true seeker is denied hope.

"I haven't spoken in secret, in a dark place. I haven't said, even in the mystery of my decree, 'Seek you me in vain.'" God promises to hear those who call on Him, and this promise stands firm. He speaks plainly: "Ask, and you shall receive." Believe, even in your trembling, that prayer will be heard. God has never said to anyone, "Seek you me in vain."

Closing Prayer

Lord, as this day closes, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
