What a fascinating glimpse into the fisherman-apostle's home! Right away we see that family life and ministry go hand in hand. The joys and burdens of home don't hinder God's work—no! When we witness the Lord's gracious work upon our own flesh and blood, we learn lessons that surpass any other earthly training.
Some religious groups may decry marriage, but true Christianity and household life agree wonderfully together. Peter's house was probably nothing more than a poor fisherman's hut, yet the Lord of Glory walked through that door, stayed under that roof, and wrought a miracle within those walls.
If you're reading this in a humble cottage this morning, take courage! Seek the company of King Jesus! God is more often found in little huts than in rich palaces. Jesus is looking around your room right now, waiting to be gracious to you.
Sickness had invaded Simon's house. A deadly fever had prostrated his mother-in-law. And the moment Jesus arrived, they told him of the sad affliction. He hastened straight to her bedside.
Is there sickness in your home this morning? You'll find Jesus by far the best physician. Go to him at once! Tell him all about the matter. Immediately lay the case before him. This concerns one of his people, and nothing about his people is trivial to him.
Observe how the Savior restored the sick woman at once. None can heal as he does! Now, we cannot be certain that the Lord will instantly remove all disease from those we love. But know this: believing prayer for the sick is far more likely to bring restoration than anything else in the world. And when healing doesn't come? Then we must meekly bow to his will who determines both life and death.
The tender heart of Jesus waits to hear your griefs. Pour them all into his patient ear!
Closing Prayer
Whatever sickness or burden weighs on your household today, tell Jesus about it right now. He's already in your room, waiting to hear and help.
