Faith that isn't tested may still be true, but it tends to be small and will likely stay that way without challenges. Faith flourishes most when everything seems to oppose it. Storms strengthen it, and lightning illuminates it. When the sea is calm, the ship won't move toward the harbor, no matter how the sails are set. But when the winds howl and the waves rise, the vessel may rock and its deck may get washed over. Yet, it's then that it pushes forward toward its destination.
Flowers growing at the base of a glacier have the loveliest blue. Stars shine brightest in the polar sky. Water tastes sweetest when it springs from desert sand. Likewise, faith is most precious when it triumphs in adversity. A tested faith brings wisdom. You wouldn't know your own weakness unless you had to wade through deep waters. And you wouldn't discover God's strength if you weren't upheld in those floods. Faith gains solidity, certainty, and depth the more it's exercised through trials.
Faith is valuable, as is its testing. Don't be discouraged if you're new to faith. You'll face trials without seeking them. Your full measure will come in time. Meanwhile, thank God for the grace you have now. Praise Him for the confidence you've gained. Walk in that grace, and you'll see God's blessings grow until your faith moves mountains and overcomes impossibilities.
Closing Prayer
God, as we start this day, help us trust You fully, even when the path isn't clear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
