November 20

The conies know exactly what they are: small, defenseless creatures. So they make their homes in the rocks, and there they are safe from every predator. My heart, learn from these little animals. You are just as weak, just as exposed to danger as they are. Be just as wise in seeking your shelter.

My only real security is found in the fortress of the unchanging God, where his unbreakable promises stand like massive walls of stone. Listen, my heart: it will go well with you if you always hide yourself in the stronghold of his glorious character. Every attribute of God is a guarantee of safety for those who trust him.

Blessed be the Lord's name! I have done this very thing. Like David hiding in the cave at Adullam, I have found safety from my enemy's cruelty. I don't have to wonder anymore about the blessing that comes to those who trust in the Lord. Long ago, when Satan and my sins hunted me down, I ran to the cleft of the rock—Christ Jesus. And there, in his wounded side, I found the most wonderful resting place.

My heart, run to him again tonight! Whatever grief you're carrying right now, Jesus feels it with you. Jesus comforts you. Jesus will help you. No king in his fortress is more secure than the little cony in its rocky burrow. The commander of ten thousand war chariots is not one bit safer than that small creature tucked away in the mountain cleft.

In Jesus, the weak become strong and the defenseless find safety. They could not be stronger if they were giants. They could not be safer if they were already in heaven. Faith gives people on earth the protection of heaven's God. What more could they need? What more could they want?

The conies can't build a castle, but they use what's already there. I cannot make myself a refuge, but Jesus has provided one. His Father has given it. His Spirit has revealed it. And look! Tonight, once again, I enter it. And I am safe from every enemy.

Closing Prayer

Whatever is hunting you tonight—fear, guilt, circumstance—stop trying to build your own defense. The Rock is already split open for you. Run to him.
