December 11

Heaven is a place where we will never sin again. Where we can finally stop our exhausting watch against an enemy who never sleeps, because there will be no tempter there to trap our feet. There the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest. Heaven is the undefiled inheritance, the land of perfect holiness. And therefore, the land of complete security.

But wait. Don't the saints taste something of that blissful security even here on earth? The doctrine of God's word is clear: all who are united to the Lamb are safe. All the righteous will keep going. Those who have entrusted their souls to Christ's keeping will find him a faithful keeper who never changes. Never.

Holding onto such a doctrine, we can enjoy security even on earth. Not that high and glorious security that keeps us from every stumble, but that holy security that rises from the rock-solid promise of Jesus: none who believe in him will ever perish. They will be with him where he is.

Believer, think often and joyfully about this truth—the perseverance of the saints! Honor the faithfulness of your God by actually trusting him. May God himself drive home to your heart this morning your absolute safety in Christ Jesus! May he convince you that your name is engraved on his hand. May he whisper in your ear the promise: "Fear not, I am with you."

Look at him. The great Guarantor of the covenant. Faithful and true. Bound and committed to present you—yes, even you, the weakest member of the family—with all the chosen people before the throne of God. Dwell on that thought. Let it sink in. In that sweet meditation, you will drink the spiced wine of the Lord's pomegranate and taste the fruits of Paradise. You will get a foretaste of the joys that ravish the souls of the perfected saints above.

But only if you can believe with unwavering faith: "Faithful is he who called you, who also will do it."

Closing Prayer

Whatever battle you're fighting today, whatever temptation feels overwhelming, remember: the God who called you is faithful. He started this work. He will finish it. Rest in that.
