What God has done before, he will do again. Human ways shift like sand, but God's ways are everlasting.
There are many reasons for this truth that should steady your soul. First, the Lord's ways flow from perfect wisdom. He orders everything according to the counsel of his own will. We act in haste, driven by passion or fear, and then live with regret and try to undo what we've done. But nothing catches the Almighty by surprise. Nothing happens that he hasn't already seen.
His ways spring from his unchanging character. In everything God does, you can see his fixed and settled nature shining through. Think about it: unless the Eternal One himself could somehow change, his ways—which are simply himself in action—must remain the same forever. Is he eternally just? Then his justice will mark his ways forever. Is he gracious, faithful, wise, tender? Then look for grace, faithfulness, wisdom, and tenderness in everything he does. Always.
Creatures act according to their nature. When that nature changes, so does their behavior. But God cannot experience even the shadow of turning. Therefore his ways stand firm for all eternity.
And nothing outside of God can force him to change course. His ways are backed by infinite power. The prophet tells us that when Jehovah marches out to save his people, the earth splits open with rivers, mountains shake, the ocean lifts up its hands in surrender, and the sun and moon freeze in their tracks. Who can stop his hand? Who dares ask him, "What are you doing?"
But it's not raw power alone that makes God's ways unshakeable. His ways embody eternal principles of righteousness, and therefore they can never fade away. Wrong breeds decay. Evil carries the seeds of its own destruction. But truth and goodness have a life in them that the ages cannot touch.
So this morning, go to your heavenly Father with absolute confidence. Remember that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And in him, the Lord is always gracious to his people. Always.
Closing Prayer
Whatever promise God made to you in his Word, he will keep. Whatever he's done for his people before, he stands ready to do for you. His ways don't shift with the times.
