December 27

"The Lord shall guide you." Not an angel. Not a prophet. Not a feeling. Jehovah himself shall guide you. Remember when God told Moses he would send an angel to lead Israel through the wilderness? Moses wouldn't have it. "If your presence doesn't go with me," he said, "don't send us up from here." Christian, God has not handed you off to an angel for your earthly pilgrimage—he himself leads the van. You may not see the cloudy, fiery pillar, but Jehovah will never forsake you.

Notice that word: shall. "The Lord SHALL guide you." How certain that makes it! How absolutely sure! God's precious "shalls" and "wills" are more reliable than any human promise, any sworn oath, any signed contract. "I will never leave you or forsake you." Bank on it.

Now observe the adverb: continually. Not sometimes. Not occasionally. We don't get guidance for the big decisions and then get left to stumble through the small ones. No! We have a perpetual monitor, a constant Guide. We are never abandoned to our own understanding to wander off the path. The Great Shepherd's voice is always there—continually—and if we follow close at his heels, we shall not err, but be led by a right way to a city to dwell in.

So what if your life gets turned upside down? What if you have to emigrate to distant shores? What if poverty crashes down on you, or you're suddenly thrust into a more responsible position than you ever imagined? What if you find yourself thrown among strangers? Or worse, cast among foes? Do not tremble. "The Lord shall guide you continually."

There is no maze you cannot escape, no puzzle you cannot solve, no dilemma from which you shall not be delivered—if you live near to God and keep your heart warm with holy love. Listen: He goes not amiss who goes in the company of God. Like Enoch before you, walk with God, and you cannot mistake your road. You have infallible wisdom directing you. Immutable love comforting you. Eternal power defending you.

Jehovah—mark that word—not just any god, not just any guide. JEHOVAH shall guide you continually.

Closing Prayer

Whatever crossroads you face tonight, remember: the God of the universe has committed himself to personally directing your steps. Stay close. Listen. Follow.
