April 17

The world's constant cry is, "Who will show us any good?" Always searching for satisfaction in comfort, pleasure, wealth. But the awakened sinner knows only one good. "Oh, if only I knew where to find Him!"

When a person truly feels the weight of their guilt, you could pour all the gold of India at their feet and they would cry, "Take it away! I want to find Him!"

It is a blessed thing when all of a person's desires come into sharp focus on one object. When you have fifty different wants pulling you in every direction, your heart becomes like stagnant water spreading into a swamp, breeding disease and pestilence. But when all your desires flow into one channel, your heart becomes a rushing river of pure water, bringing life and fertility wherever it goes.

Happy is the person with one desire, if that desire is set on Christ—even if it hasn't been fulfilled yet. When Jesus becomes the soul's single longing, it's a blessed sign of God's work within.

Such a person will never be satisfied with mere religious routines. They cry out: "I want Christ! I must have Him—mere ordinances are useless to me. I want Him! Don't offer me these empty ceremonies. You offer me the empty pitcher while I am dying of thirst. Give me water or I die! Jesus is my soul's desire. I would see Jesus!"

Is this your condition at this very moment? Do you have just one desire, and is it for Christ? Then you are not far from the kingdom of heaven! Is there one wish burning in your heart—to be washed clean from all your sins in Jesus' blood? Can you honestly say, "I would give up everything I own, everything I hope for, just to feel that I have an interest in Christ"?

Then despite all your fears, be of good cheer! The Lord loves you. You will come out into daylight soon, and you will rejoice in the freedom with which Christ makes men free.

Closing Prayer

What desires are pulling your heart in different directions today? Let them all flow into one channel: "I would see Jesus."
