Thank God there is One who never changes, and who is always with us. Thank God there is one solid rock in the middle of life's crashing waves. O my soul, do not set your affections on treasures that rust, that moths destroy, that decay and disappear—set your heart on the One who remains forever faithful to you. Do not build your house on the shifting quicksands of this deceptive world, but found your hopes on this rock, which will stand unmovably secure when the rains descend and the floods roar.
My soul, I charge you: store your treasure in the only vault that cannot be cracked. Keep your jewels where you will never lose them. Put everything in Christ—set all your affections on his person, all your hope in his merit, all your trust in his efficacious blood, all your joy in his presence. Then you can laugh at loss! You can defy destruction!
Remember this: every flower in the world's garden fades in turn. The day is coming when nothing will be left but black, cold earth. Death's black extinguisher will soon put out your candle. Oh! But how sweet to have sunlight when the candle is gone! The dark flood will soon roll between you and everything you have. So wed your heart to the One who will never leave you. Trust yourself to him who will walk with you through death's black and surging current. He will land you safely on the celestial shore. He will make you sit with him in heavenly places forever.
Go ahead, you sorrowing child of affliction—tell your secrets to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust every concern of yours to him who can never be taken from you, who will never leave you, and who will never let you leave him. This is Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
"I am with you always." That is enough for my soul to live on, let who will forsake me.
Closing Prayer
Whatever you're clinging to today will eventually slip through your fingers. But Christ? He has already gripped you, and he will never let go.
