When facing certain sins, sometimes the only way to win is to run away. Like the mythical creature basilisk, whose gaze traps its prey, sin can ensnare us if we linger too long. To avoid evil acts, we must steer clear of their temptations. We should guard our eyes and not even look at what tempts us. These sins need only a small spark to ignite into a blaze.
Who would willingly step into a leper's cell and risk infection? Only someone wanting to become leprous might seek such danger. A sailor would avoid a storm at all costs, not test his luck against it. Wise pilots don't try to sail close to the quicksands or brush against the rocks just to test their skill.
Their goal is always to navigate safely. Today, I could face great danger. Let me be as wise as a serpent and stay away from it. Better to have the wings of a dove than the jaws of a lion today. I might lose something by avoiding bad company, but it's far better to leave behind my cloak than my character.
I don't need to be wealthy, but I must remain pure. No friendship, beauty, talent, or mockery should distract me from fleeing sin. While I need to resist the devil until he flees, I must flee the lusts of the flesh, or they'll defeat me. Holy God, protect those who, like Joseph, face temptation. Keep them safe from the world's allure, fleshly desires, and the devil's schemes.
Closing Prayer
God, as we start this day, help us hold onto Your promises. Keep us pure and safe in Your strength. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
